Last weekend we were out and about on Saturday. The big show was at Sardine with the legendary DJ Bobby Suryadi from Jakarta’s Stadium club in town and spinning some tunes at the fanciest outdoor venue in Seminyak.
The place was packed and the anticipation was palpable. There was a frenzy of phone camera activity when the man arrived to the decks and there were moments of glee when some old STD tracks were spun, which got people up out of their seats and bouncing around. I noticed the crowd was not just the old crusty mob that would have been going to Stadium back in the day, but a whole new younger crowd. The music was pretty poppy too, and not exactly the music that would have been played in Hayam Wuruk 20 years ago either, but all good fun.
Next stop was Red Ruby where an interesting DJ from Bulgaria was playing. They say Pavel Petrov’s the next big thing and he didn’t disappoint. He was banging out some great melodic techno and straight up underground with drops coming thick and fast. I did check him out on youtube when I saw he was on the way so I was well prepared. He smashed it and I don’t think RR has seen so much fire coming from the booth in a very long time. Bring it on, bring more on!
Photos Above: Last Saturday, first stop Sardine for Bobby Suryadi and a mass of people. Pretty crazy fight at the front door as so many people were trying to get in at the same time. Inside the crowd went crazy, too, for the Stadium boss DJ. Later we moved to Red Ruby for one of their best shows in ages, Pavel Petrov. Great stuff, awesome night out!
So, I read somewhere the boat taxi is going to save us from the incessant traffic issues of south Bali in the near future. Or maybe just help out a little. That’s according to an article in Antara the other day. I can’t really imagine how that would be possible, though. Maybe on the Sanur side, but the west side I would think the surf would be too treacherous most days to be able to get on the beach safely. I then discussed this with boy Papü and it seems people already use the boat taxi to get back and forth from Padang Padang Beach, Uluwatu to Canggu’s Nelayan Beach near Batubolong. I suppose both those beaches have a bit of protection from the surf, but I guess you would need to pack your dress cloths in a bag if you plan on going out at the other end. You wouldn’t want to be in your fancy shoes or strides wading through the beach break. Also, with all these recent demos complaining about Gojek drivers again and trying to ban them again, it’s hard to say how a boat operation would work without the drivers at both ends – and if it’s the local transport charging a small fortune every time you jump on, as they normally do, the whole thing is set to sink before it swims.
Meanwhile, what really gets me about all this is the lack of work going on. What happened to the ring road and all these other projects slated to start this year? I can’t see anything happening anywhere and it’s already near the end of May. Has anyone seen anything? Leave a comment below if so. I must say it gets a bit frustrating to see the lack of progress.
We’ll be heading down to Uluwatu later today. First off the Lomo Resort Grand Opening near Padang Padang and later to Tabu, where I haven’t been for a while, for the Youngr show. Until next week, ol buddies!
Have a good weekend you all!
